You have got the addresses for Donald and Neil MacGregor the wrong way round. Neil was from 12a Tolsta Chaolais and Donald from 12b, which is where I now live
ReplyDeleteAnon, many thanks. Have corrected as posted. I was uncertain about these from the outset.
ReplyDeleteI believe there are a lot of missteps in this and the other online link for soldiers from the Isle of Lewis. According to my cousins, our uncle was Malcolm "Collum" MacKay, the son of Donald MacKay and Margaret MacCleod of Tolsta Cholais. At 21 he would become the youngest RSM in the British Army, with the Seaforth Highlanders, and was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and died while in the Army in India, circa 1931.
ReplyDeleteMy mother was Christina MacKay and immigrated to the US in 1920 Her passport said Stornaway, but she was from Tolsta Chaolis and I visited the site of the Black House where she was born and raised. My cousin Ian Shaw lives in Stornoway and probably knows a great deal more.
Ronald MacKay Armstrong. San Francisco. Age 79
Ronald,
ReplyDeleteThank you for leaving a comment on the site. There are a couple of points to bear in mind. First of all, this site only lists those from Lewis who died during or immediately after the First War, due to or after war service. To my knowledge, no Mackays from T.C. are listed as having fallen during WW1. Secondly, the information related to WW1 soldiers is riddled with errors, omissions &c, and my information is only as good as that. I'll bear in mind your suggestion re Ian Shaw.
Ronald
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like your uncle was my grandfather. Just had some research done by a close friend and have gone back to 1751.
Joan Fenton (Mackay)
Thanks for putting all this together. I have noticed a few details which don't match with other online data.
ReplyDeletePrivate Donald Macgregor should have different dates, should be "died 25th April aged 37 according to war graves".
