Your entry for Finlay Macleod of 46 Ranish, who was lost when the RNT Bega was sunk by U 58 on 18/6/1917, states it was sunk off Dover. The RN Casualty site www.naval-history.net and the site www.wrecksite.eu/wreck both state it was sunk 40 miles North of Shetland, the latter site gives the co-ordinates and plots it on the map.

You also show him as Signaler while the others show him as Seaman. I'm not sure if both could be correct or not, but would welcome any further information you may have about this. My address is www.telfer664@btinternet.com. Finlay was my wife's uncle.

Hope this info is of use to you.

Telfer664,
The information on the sinking of the Bega was taken from Loyal Lewis Roll of Honour 1914-1918. This publication contains many errors and inaccuracies. I am happy to quote the location of the sinking of the Bega as north of Shetland; the Roll of Honour is also the source for his rank; checking the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's entry for Finlay shows his rank to be that of Seaman. I have amended that information too.

Thank you for posting a picture of my great-grandfather, John MacLeod, 19 Ranais. It's one I had never seen before.

Donald MacDonald was my granny Dolina's brother. Yes, it was tragic to have come through the war and lose life so near to home. My granny often spoke about him.
