There must be some mistake regarding Seaman NORMAN MARTIN
Last address in Lewis: 28 Shulishader
Regiment or division: Merchant Marine, SS Camellia
Date of death: February, 7th, 1918 at the age of 22
Ship sunk by U-boat.
The SS Camellia appears to have been lost on 27 Nov, 1917. No listing for a Norman Martin can be found on the CWGC site.
Thanks Anette S. I have not been able to trace Norman Martin on the CWGC site either. Got his information from the Stornoway Historical Society, and realise a transcription error has been made - he reportedly lived at 28 Knock, Point.
Many men on this site are not traceable on the CWGC site.
Norman Martin, subject to above discussion, has been placed in the section for Knock (Point), with information obtained from the CWGC website.
Donald Smith and Murdo Macaulay grew up in the same area in Lewis. Donald was from Portnaguran and Murdo was from Shader just about a mile away. They both travelled to Fort William Ontario where Donald - "Dairy" - was a teamster living at 301 Ogden Street and would have had a team of horses for milk delivery. Murdo lived at 324 North Marks Street. At the outbreak of WWI they travelled together to Winnipeg and on the 10th of January 1916 they stood together in line to sign up with the 179th Battalion of the Cameron Highlanders of Canada. Donald was ahead in the line as the Regiment Number given to him was 859582. John signed up next with Regiment Number 859583. They trained and served in the same unit for the duration of the war. Donald survived and returned to Canada following the war with Kate Martin of Back. They were married in Fort William on the 17th of August 1921 and raised their family. His freind Murdo did not survive. He was killed in action on the 26th of August 1918 and is remembered on the Lewis Roll of Honor:

Angus MacDonald of 15 Shader point was my great grand uncle, his nephew M MacDonald is 83 with a memory longer than an elephant's! The SS Bronwen was sunk on the 24 Sep 1916 by the German submarine U-35 (Lothar von Arnauld de la Perière), 25 miles NxE of Dragonera Island. The Bronwen was carrying a load of coal from Barry to Marseilles. He was taken as a POW to POW station Salzerbad, Austria. He developed TB and following his release at the end of the war and was hospitalized in Le Havre where he died 27 Nov 1918.
My cousin was in Le Havre last week and took some awesome pics of his headstone, the monument and the cemetery. There is an inscription in Gaelic at the bottom of the marker, unfortunately, I've not had much luck translating it one word at at time...It reads ''Mac Deleas Gradhach braither Urramach Eiridh (deigh) Do Vhr Athair a Rio'' Wondering is someone can translate this for me. Murray was able to translate some of this but says it's not Lewis Gaelic.
Angus' nephew is looking for photos of him and I've got a couple of his POW letters along with the photo's of his headstone I can send you if you are interested. I find if very sad that he survived a POW camp for 2 years and dies on his way home.

Vikki,
It would be very helpful if you provide an email address, or contact me through the Kontactr button on this site. I would be interested in the letters and photograph. I have a translator who cannot really make sense of the text as you copied it, so the pic of the gravestone would be very helpful. Any comment with personal contact details will obviously not be published.
